Under a managed float, the ringgit’s value is determined mainly by market forces, but Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) can intervene when needed to maintain stability or prevent excessive volatility. With a fixed rate, the currency is pegged to another currency or basket at a set value—there’s no market-driven fluctuation. Malaysia switched from a pegged system in 1997 to the managed float we use today, which gives us flexibility while allowing BNM to step in during crises.

When Malaysia runs a current account surplus (exporting more than we import), there’s more demand for ringgit from foreign buyers, which tends to strengthen the currency. Conversely, a deficit means we’re buying more from abroad, requiring more foreign currency and potentially weakening the ringgit. Malaysia typically maintains a healthy current account surplus—around 2-3% of GDP in recent years—which provides underlying support for the currency.

BNM’s foreign reserves—currently over $100 billion—are the ammunition for defending the ringgit during volatile periods. When the currency comes under selling pressure, BNM can sell foreign currency to increase demand for ringgit, stabilizing the rate. These reserves also signal to markets that Malaysia has strong external position, which builds confidence and discourages speculative attacks on the currency.

The trade-weighted index measures the ringgit’s value against a basket of currencies weighted by Malaysia’s trading partners’ importance—so the US dollar carries more weight than, say, the Thai baht. A rising index means the ringgit is strengthening relative to our major trading partners.
